What does this quote means?
The Harvard Law states: Under controlled conditions of light, temperature, humidity, and nutrition, the organism will do as it damn well pleases.”

- It means that no matter how much you control the environment of a plant, it will always do as it wants (even though plants don't technically have a will of their own). You can control the lighting and the heat, but it will still react as it normally would. You can't change that. I believe this quote is meant to be making fun of scientists who think that controlling everything is the best way to achieve anything in life.
- This is a joke. It's a particular kind of joke in which the second half doesn't match the first half. The way it starts out, it sounds like come kind of observation or prediction, but then you read the second half and you see there is no law, it doesn't really tell you anything. This is a surprise and it makes you smile. Another example is: "If you took all the students that fall asleep during lectures and laid them end to end, they'd be a lot more comfortable." Usually if you are taking something and laying them end to end, it's going to be a statement of how long they would reach. But in this case it's something completely different.
- Its a joke, more for an educated person. Meaning that no matter how well you tend to something/someone. Event's will more than likely occur that will cause failure, or at least lead to it. Alternative; "The best laid plans of mice and men usually go awry"
- Its saying you really don't have control over a 'controlled' situation. You might set certain conditions up, but the result is not of your doing, its out of your control.
- The conditions mentioned are 3 of the 5 condtions necessary for bacteria to grow. The other 2 are time and oxygen. If all of the necessary conditions for growth are met, the amount of growth, as well as toxins or beneficial by-product can only be determined by the type of bacteria and how ideal the controlled conditions are. Just like humans, the bacteria will do pretty much what it "wants" to do if we assign the ability of thought to it as well.
